Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic
rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, when indigenous Fijians overthrew
the elected coalition dominated by members of the Indian community - descendants
of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th Century.
This triggered a series of adverse events, including the introduction - and subsequent
withdrawal - of a constitution enshrining indigenous Fijian political supremacy.
The following coup in 2000 was carried out by an armed gang that held the country's
first ethnic Indian Prime Minister and members of his government hostage for 56
days before the military ended the rebellion. Malice over the 2000 coup persisted,
with bitter divisions over proposals to amnesty those behind it through the Racial
Tolerance and Unity Bill.
On January 12, 2006 Land Forces Commander confronted the Army Commander over threats
to depose the Government. The army still believes that the Government is hiding
behind "indigenous rights" to protect known coup conspirators.
On May 18, the Prime Minister has been sworn in for the second term following the
narrow poll victory.
The Fijian society remains divided between indigenous Fijians and Indo-Fijians.

provided by countries participating in the Debtor Reporting System. Debt Service

10 GDP per unit of energy use is the PPP GDP per kilogram of oil equivalent of commercial
energy use. PPP GDP is gross domestic product converted to 2000 constant international
dollars using purchasing power parity rates. An international dollar has the same
purchasing power over GDP as a U.S. dollar has in the United States. Energy data
come from the World Bank's WDI and GDF databases. Data on energy use are from the
International Energy Agency. GDP is estimated by World Bank staff and are based
on national accounts data collected by World Bank staff during economic missions
or reported by national statistical offices to other international organizations.
Purchasing power parity conversion factors are estimates by World Bank staff based
on data collected by the International Comparison Program.
