was the Harvard Program for Research in Science and Engineering Fellow.
Ivan
investigated the development of corticostriatal projection neurons, which are
involved in the pathophysiology of neurological disorders such as Huntington’s
disease, Parkinson’s disease, and cerebral palsy.
His thesis was evaluated with
Summa Cum Laude and is in preparation for Journal of Neuroscience.
Among other
awards, Ivan received the Thomas T. Hoopes Prize for Outstanding Senior Thesis
Project.
Ivan is the founding president of the Harvard Undergraduate Global
Health Forum – 100-member-strong group dedicated to raising awareness of global
health issues from a holistic perspective, to engaging faculty experts at
Harvard in providing students with a realistic perspective on confronting global
health challenges and connecting students with volunteer opportunities in the
field.
This year Ivan and his colleagues set a milestone by organizing and
securing funding for a team of Harvard students and professors to travel to
Tanzania and perform gap analysis of health care needs in local hospitals in Dar
es Salaam and Lindi, subsequently returning to the United States to work with
pharmaceutical, informatics, education, and venture capital businesses to
develop solutions that will close these gaps.
Ivan plans to further student
engagement in FPCD projects, especially health care oriented efforts in
Timor-Leste in addition to Africa.
